The Putatan 2 drinking water plant in the Philippines, where Arup led the feasibility work and managed the project implementation, was honoured with a ‘Distinction’ in the Water Project of the Year category at the Global Water Awards 2020.
Arup has been working closely with Maynilad Water Services to develop this new treatment facility, delivering 150,000 cubic metres of water per day at Putatan, Metro Manila. It was built next to the Putatan 1 plant and provides water for around an additional one million people.
To help relieve major water shortages and the consistently low levels in Angat dam, which provides most of the city’s water, the new plant draws water from a different source, Laguna Lake, therefore increasing the security of the city’s water resources.
The new plant deploys world-class membrane technology on an unprecedented scale in the Philippines to ensure clean potable water. With a number of advanced technical pre-treatment including dissolved air flotation (DAF) and biological aerated filtration (BAF), the water goes through ultrafiltration (UF) followed by reverse osmosis (RO), before a final chlorination step.
Acting as the project manager on the client’s side, Arup has undertaken a feasibility study, developed the project specifications, and managed the procurement process and contract administration.
